Women’s Team

The Quarter-Finals of this event were played tonight, with the Americans losing 9-4 to England in a nail-biting encounter.

Women’s Singles

When the first round of the Women’s Singles had finished, there were mixed fortunes for the four American representatives.  Sadly, we lost Bette Cunningham and Paula Murphy, but Cali West and Lisa Ayers both produced strong performances.  Ayers produced a brilliant 16-darter in the tie-breaker to defeat Karin Krappen, while West had a slightly more comfortable ride in her 4-0 victory over Sofie Jahn Bendorff,

In the second round, missed doubles proved costly for Cali, and Rhian Edwards took full advantage to forge a 4-1 victory.  Lisa, meanwhile, bounced back from losing the first two legs to earn herself a clash with World #1, Deta Hedman.

That, unfortunately, signaled the end of the American challenge in the Women’s Singles.  Despite a fantastic effort from Ayers, Hedman sneaked a 4-2 win.  Breaking the English girl’s throw in the very first leg gave Ayers the perfect start, and the two traded blows for five more legs before Hedman was able to clinch her win.

Men’s Pairs

Tom Sawyer and Jerry Van Loan took a well-earned win against a very tough home pairing in Round 1.  After losing the first leg, some clinical finishing saw the next four go the way of the Americans, but the next match brought a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Welsh duo, Jim Williams and Mark Layton.
