BUTLER BEATS WORLD CHAMPION MITCHELL!

In a day which saw seven of the Top 16 Men’s seeds tumble out of the event, Ohio’s Larry Butler provided the highlight of the action by defeating current Lakeside World Champion, Scott Mitchell!  In a compelling five-setter that went to all fifteen legs, Butler held his nerve to check out from 20 in the decider, after the Englishman had failed to convert his effort at 76.

In a match where every set went with the darts, the fact that the former World Matchplay Champion threw first in the fifth proved crucial.  The only time Butler was behind was after the first leg of the fifth set, when Mitchell posted a superb 13-darter against the throw.  However, the American bounced back with a 13 of his own, held his throw for the set, and the rest is history…

Butler now faces Latvian Madars Razma in the Top 16.

Mitchell (#3) was the highest seed to fall, but was joined on the sidelines by #5 Wesley Harms, #6 Geert de Vos, and #7 Jeffrey de Graaf.  Full results and statistics are available here.

Also held today were the two youth finals.  In the Girls’ final, England’s Danielle Ashton beat Rebecca Graham (Scotland) 4-1, and in the Boys’ final, Justin van Tergouw (Netherlands) grabbed a 4-2 victory over England’s Joshua Richardson.

Tomorrow (Saturday) sees the Top 16 of the Men’s Event, and the Women’s quarter-finals, and updates will be posted here.
