R.I.P. Martin Fitzmaurice

It is with a very heavy heart that I report the passing of one of the best-known figures in world darts, Martin Fitzmaurice.  The featured photo is Martin with his grand-daughter Sarah.

For many years a caller and M.C. at events like the Lakeside World Championship and Winmau World Masters, Martin was the face and voice of the British Darts Organisation.  A typical brash Londoner with a wicked sense of humor – and at times controversial – Martin was never one hide his feelings.  Love him or hate him, you certainly couldn’t ignore our Martin, and I was never one of the haters.

It’s always difficult to find words at these times, but when you lose a friend who you have known for some forty years, it is that much harder.  Yes, that’s a long, long time.  Despite some of the issues caused by the split in darts in the early 1990’s, Martin and I remained friends, and on my trips back in recent years, it was always great to meet up, have a laugh, and reminisce about the good old days.

My thoughts, and the thought of everyone at the ADO, are with his family at this sad time.  R.I.P. mate…

Finally, let’s not forget his legendary introduction, for which the big fella will always be remembered :

Let’s………………..Play………………..DARTS!!!
