2017 Winmau World Masters Preview

Tomorrow (Monday) sees the start of the Winmau World Masters in England.  The tournament returns to the cozy little North Sea resort of Bridlington, where it was held from 2002 to 2009.

The oldest of the official World Championships, the Masters dates back to 1974 when England’s Cliff Inglis captured the title at the West Centre Hotel in Fulham, London.  No American male has emerged victorious, with Larry Butler’s superb run to claim the runner-up spot in 2015 the best performance.  Sandy Reitan lifted the women’s crown 26 years ago, while Kathy Maloney, Marilyn Popp, and Stacy Bromberg have all reached the final.  Sadly, no American youth has reached the final of either the combined youth, or individual boys’/girls’ events.

This year, we are sending seven men (Larry Butler, Tom Sawyer, Dave Walsh, James Cotton, Joe Chaney, Jim Fitzsimmons, Leonard Gates)), two women (Lisa Ayers, Stacy Hudson), three girls (Kaylee Roy, Jenna Yazbek, Rylee Moran), and two boys (Tyler Burnett, Jacob Demers), and with a little luck, Americans make a little history!  Monday sees the floor rounds, with the stage finals on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Here are the first-round draws for all events:

10.00am – Group 10 – Dave Walsh vs Mark Currans (NIR)
10.00am – Group 13 – Jim Fitzsimmons vs Charlie Symonds (ENG)
10.20am – Group 4 – Lisa Ayers vs Alicia Sanchez (ESP)
10.30am – Group 13 – Larry Butler vs Keith Geraght (IRE)
10.50am – Group 1 – Tyler Burnett vs Wessel Nijman (NL)
11.00am – Group 3 – Joe Chaney vs Martin Adams (ENG)
11.00am – Group 7 – Leonard Gates vs Paul Coughlin (SCO)
11.10am – Group 4 – Jacob Demers vs Marco Jungwirth (AUT)/Wesley Van Der Voorde (BEL)
11.20am – Group 4 – Sandy Hudson vs Sharon Jansen (NL)
11.30am – Group 16 – Tom Sawyer vs Mark Westgarth (ENG)
12.00pm – Group 3 – James Cotton vs Toon Greebe (NL)/Martin Atkins (ENG)
3.25pm – Group 1 – Jenna Yazbek vs Shannon Reeves (ENG)
3.25pm – Group 1 – Rylee Moran vs Amy Byrne (IRE)
3.25pm – Group 2 – Kaylee Roy vs Laura Shepherd (ENG)

Highlight of the above looks to be “Chanesaw” facing three-time World Master (and three-time World Champion, of course), Martin Adams.

Results will of course be posted here.  Live updates will be available from the BDO website, and the two days of stage play will be broadcast live on Winmau TV.

Good luck to everyone!
