2018 Lakeside World Championship – Day One Results

Disappointingly, American hopes in this year’s Lakeside World Championship were soon extinguished as Joe Chaney suffered a preliminary round defeat at the hands of Danny Noppert.  Noppert, last year’s beaten finalist here, jumped in to snatch the very first leg when the Tennessean failed from 96, and from then on, never let “Chanesaw” back into the match.

After his opponent grabbed the second leg with a nice 15-darter, Joe pulled it back to 2-1, but the Dutchman posted a 14 for the set.  The second set was even quicker, as Noppert recorded legs of 12 and 15 (and checkouts of 121 and 126) on his way to a 3-0 scoreline.

Things looked bleak as the U.S. #1 slumped to a 2-0 deficit in the third, but Chaney held his throw in the third leg, and then broke serve to tie the set.  Sadly, that was the last time the man from Chattanooga was to find a double, and it was game over.  Noppert finished with an impressive average of 31.63 per dart, and now takes on Richie Edwards in the first round proper.

Elsewhere, 2015 Champ Scott Mitchell sneaked past Darius Labanauskas in a tense five-setter of high quality, while top-seeded Deta Hedman began her quest for the one title that has so far eluded her with a straight sets victory over Rachna David.
