Day Seven – Friday – was Women’s Semi-Final Day, and what a lineup it was; ten-time World Champion Trina Gulliver MBE taking on three-time winner Anastasia Dobromyslova, and another three-time (and reigning) Champ, Lisa Ashton. squaring off against Top Seed Deta Hedman.

Dobromyslova was the first to reach the final with a straight-sets victory over the “Golden Girl”, although it could have been different had Gulliver been able to check out from 95 for the first set.  The Russian was then joined by Ashton, who inflicted another heartbreaking defeat on Hedman, who is still looking for her first Lakeside title.

All four men’s quarter-finals went the distance, with three Englishman and a German advancing to the Top 4.  The Top two seeds, Glen Durrant and Mark McGeeney, were joined by the unseeded pairing of Michael Unterbuchner and former Champ Scott Waites.

Day Eight brought the Women’s Final, and Lisa Ashton chose the right time to post the highest women’s average of the week – (89.80), and it helped her retain the title she has won three of the last four years.  Dobromyslova started brightly, taking the first set 3-0, but after that, could only add one more leg.

Highlight for the men was the last leg of the Durrant-Waites clash.  Having opened up a three-set lead, “Duzza” was playing with great confidence, and quickly went 2-0 up with legs of 15 and 13.  Then, things got crazy as he opened the third leg with back-to-back 180’s, and followed with a seventh T20!  The eighth dart dropped just below the T19, and the chance of the first perfect game since 1990 was gone.  Still, there was no messing around, and Durrant wrapped up the match with an 11-darter.

McGeeney was soon 2-0 up on Unterbuchner, but the German quickly rebounded to take the next three sets.  The #2 seed then followed suit, and took the next three sets himself.  The Englishman struggled a little in the next, and Unterbuchner pulled on back to make it 6-4.  McGeeney had the darts in the tenth, and with all legs going with the throw, we were left with an all-English Final.
