As 2011 comes to an end, I figured that it was time for me to return to the fold. I’ve been going through a number of personal issues this year which have taken up a lot of my time and thoughts. As a result, I have been unable to devote as much time to the blog as I would have liked, so I would just like to offer my humblest apologies.
So, here are my thoughts on 2011…
As I mentioned above, it hasn’t been a good year for me, and unsurprisingly, this has been reflected in my performances on the dartboard. It’s not that I’ve have played that badly, but even being just a little off (mentally, as much as anything) can prove very costly. Plus, the calendar was particularly unkind to me, and not only did I have to miss a few major tournaments which I would usually have attended, I was also deprived of the opportunity to secure my annual trip to the World Masters.
Still, I wasn’t going to succumb totally, and looking back now, I’m quite proud of the fact that I have again managed to secure a place in the ADO Top 10. At the moment, I’m not sure if I have a spot on the National Team, as Tom Curtin is breathing down my neck, so all I can do is hope. Anyway, enough about me…
Returning to the aforementioned World Masters, I was really hoping that our players could make a real impact, but only Jim Widmayer was able to reach the stage. A perennial Masters qualifier, Jim’s been knocking on the door for a few years now, but missed doubles again proved costly. The same with the World Cup in Ireland; I had high hopes for a strong U.S. team, but again, it could – and should – have been a lot better.
Domestically, 2011 was a good year. It’s getting tougher and tougher out there, and it was pleasing to see some players really starting to fulfill their potential, most notably Gordon Dixon, Tom Sawyer, Tom Curtin, and Donny Joe. These four – most notably Donny and Tom C. – have been around for a while, and it’s nice to see them making it big. Others worthies include D.J. Sayre, Ryan Vanderweit, Connley Litton, and Joe Huffman. No disrespect to the rest, but I just feel that these players merit particular mention.
On the distaff side, it is nice to see Marlise Kiel, Cali West, and Sandy Hudson consolidating their positions as true contenders, but I must say how delighted I am to see Sarah ‘Weeble’ Simoens truly making an impact. It’s amazing what a little application and confidence can do, eh?
As far as the ADO is concerned, I’d like to thank Buddy Bartoletta for his term as President, and to commiserate with Chris Helms on his accession to the throne in the madhouse! We are looking to try some new ideas, and personally, I think that the changes to the National Cricket Championship were positive, although I still feel that a lot of people don’t fully understand the benefits of such changes. Hopefully, we can make things better for everyone.
Have a Happy, Peaceful, and Prosperous New Year.
