Day 3 brought a major shock in this year’s Lakeside World Championships. Top seed James Wilson suffered a shock defeat by the Swede Peter Sajwani in round one of the tournament.

Wilson who is the current BDO World Trophy Champion raced through the first set starting each of his winning 3 legs with a maximum score. He finished the set in 11 darts. After that his finishing deserted him and Sajwani began to pull away and secure a famous victory.

Another seed was knocked out in the first game of the evening sessions when qualifier Brian Dawson put out Number 12 seed Jeffrey de Graaf 3 sets to 0. The Dutch man did not seem to get into his stride and the man from Rotherham played steady darts, dropping only 2 legs in the entire match. Dawson, supported by his family will continue to live his dream and meets Latvian Madars Razma in the second round.

In the other games of the day Jim Widmayer of the USA took on the 20 year old Rhys ‘Lightening’ Hayden. Widmayer, a sanitation worker from Staten Island, took the game 3 legs to 2 hitting the highest check out of the tournament so far with a 160 out.

Daniel Larsson beat Dutch player Willem Mandigers and in our only ladies game of the day Rachel Brooks beat the 18 year old Casey Gallagher.

There was a Dutch/Belgian encounter in our 6th game of the night when Number 13 seed Remco van Eijden met Geert de Vos. Sadly, it was an unlucky seeding for Van Eijden as he went down 3 sets to 1 to the man from Aalst in Belgium. De Vos won the first four consecutive legs when van Eijden found his range and he levelled the game taking out 84. De Vos however continued with some deadly finishing and took them game with 87 on the bull.

The last game of the day saw the Black Countries Jamie Hughes take on another Dutchman Michel van der Horst. This turned into a tense affair with both players exchanging blows until the bitter end. Hughes could have won the match with double top but wired it which allowed van der Horst to bring the 4th leg to all square. Hughes on his debut moved into the second round storming ahead in the last leg taking two darts for the match – treble 14, double 16.

Jim plays round 2 vs Rick Hofstra on the Netherlands.
