Leonard Gates’ quest to lift the bet365 US Darts Masters title came to an abrupt end at the hands of World Champ Peter Wright. Missed doubles early on proved costly, as instead of holding a 4-0 lead, it was 2-2. A brace of 13-darters gave the Scot a two-leg cushion, only for Gates to close the gap by taking leg 7. Sadly, that was the last double that ‘Soldier’ was to hit, as Wright wrapped it up 8-4.

Michael Smith and Michael van Gerwen posted the top two averages in the quarters, a feat they repeated in the semis as they set up an enthralling final.

Van Gerwen started the final in style, and soon opened a 3-1 lead. Smith pulled level with legs of 15 and 13, only for the Dutchman to respond with a 15 of his own. From there, it was all Smith, and leg counts of 14, 15, 14, 14, and 12 sealed an impressive victory.
