2025 WDF World Cup – Day Two
Wednesday’s action kicked off with the women’s team event, and the Americans kicked off in some style! Against Turks and Caicos, our women stormed to a superb 9-0 victory to give us a perfect start. The next match was always going to be a little tougher as we were facing the mighty England team. While we weren’t able to get a second win on the board, it was clear that we weren’t overawed by them, and managed to hold them to a very respectable 9-6 scoreline. Obvious highlight of the tie was the brilliant form shown by Paula Murphy, as she went unbeaten in her four outings.
That left us needing to beat Italy to advance to the knockout. Well, like the men yesterday, it was a nail-biter, and the Italians forced a seventeenth-leg decider. No worries, though, as Paula secured our place in the next stage.
While the women were doing their thing, the men were busy with the open singles. Jim Widmayer and Robbie Phillips were both faced with a preliminary round, and while Robbie eased confidently into the first full round, Jim slippedto a disappointing defeat at the hands of Canadian Darrell Cormier.
With three Americans in the round, hopes were high.Sadly, Robbie was unable to build on his earlier triumph, and lost to Dutchman Alexander Merks. Robbie was joined on the sidelines by Mike Neubert, who was agonisingly close to providing something of an upset, but the man from Arizona was edged out in a tense tie-break by England’s Jarred Cole.
This left Bruce Robbins, who reached the quarter-finals of the singles in Denmark Two years ago. After a string of fine victories, Bruce again found himself at top 16, where he was up against the experienced Swede, Andreas Harrysson. Throwing first, held his darts in the first three legs, but so too did Andreas. The game swung in leg seven, when Robbins failed to check out from 48, and his opponent stepped to take the advantage. Despite a well-timed 180 from the American, a tidy 14-darter from Harrysson consigned him to a second successive defeat, one short of a medal.
The youth players had their mixed pairs this morning. Alexis Achgill and Jeremy Demers were up against some stiff opposition, and the impressive Turkish pairing of Aysegul Karagoz and Toprak Aras went undefeated in the group. They are joined in the knockout by Yang Yi-Ching and Fan Yu-Chieh (Chinese Taipei)
Nalanie Tirrell and Tim Welcome managed gret win against Egypt, but it was the Dutch duo of Fardau de Jong and Ruben Baalmans who topped the group. Had Nalanie and Tim not found the winning doubles elusive against Hatice Aydinalp and Kerem Calikiran, it could have been them advancing instead of the Turkish pair.
