2022 WDF Winmau World Masters – Day Five
The World Masters weekend concluded with the men’s and women’s qualifiers for the Lakeside World Championship.
Tanja Bencic, Dani Warmack, and Sandy Haas all reached the Top 64 before exiting, and that left just Liz Tynan and Tracy Feiertag of our crew. Feiertag took care of Czech Barbora Hospodarska without dropping a leg, while Tynan won 4-2 against Iceland’s Ingibjorg Magnusdottir. The problem now was that they clashed at Top 16! At least we were guaranteed an American in the quarters…
Tracy edged the first with the darts, only for Liz to do the same in the second. Some scrappy finishing from both players in the third saw it go to Liz, and the Chicagoan then made it 3-1. A first throw 180 in the fifth gave Liz the edge, but some solid scoring from Tracy closed the gap. Again, both struggled on doubles in the sixth, but it was Liz Tynan who was now just two matches from a place in the World Championship. First, she had to deal with the very experienced Mayumi Ouchi.
Liz could have taken the opener in just 15 darts, but a miss at tops let Mayumi in to win in 17. A second 17 (with a couple of ton-pluses) doubled her lead. Both struggled to finish in the third, but the Japanese girl made it 3-0, and yet another 17 made it 4-0. Liz gave herself a shot at 76 to stay in the match, but it didn’t go, and it was Ouchi who took the win, and shortly after, another, which sent her to Lakeside. She was joined there by World Masters runner-up, Almudena Fajardo.
Three Americans reached the Top 64 of the men’s event. Joe Chaney and Bruce Robbins negotiated that hurdle, with Robbie Phillips falling at the hands of Dutchman Jarno Bottenberg. Sadly, Joe’s run was ended in four legs next time out by Scot Shaun McDonald. That left Bruce to battle it out with Czech Filip Sebesta, and as hard as the Bostonian battled, he could win just the one leg.
The four qualifiers for Lakeside were McDonald, Bottenberg, Austrian Christian Goedl, and Bottenberg;s fellow Dutchman Arjan Konterman.
